Dave Turner has described his great “pride” after taking over as Seaton Carew Golf Club’s 115th captain.
The Hartlepool-born 56-year-old, who has lived in Seaton Carew with his wife Ann since 1988, has been a member at the tenth oldest golf course in the country since 1992.
Dave has taken over the honour from Norman Bagley, who served the prestigious club so impressively during an extended two years because of the global pandemic.
The handover of the captaincy, at the annual general meeting earlier this month, has coincided with Seaton Carew reaffirming its reputation as one of the best in the country,
National Club Golfer recently included Seaton Carew among its reputable Top 100 rankings, with the links named the 46th best in England following significant improvement under course manager Tom Coulson.

Dave, a former Dyke House pupil who has two daughters and a third grandchild due, said: “At last – having been vice-captain for two years due to Covid it is a great honour to take over.
“Having looked at the photographs of the previous 114 captains displayed in our new Captains Corner in the Bunting Lounge, I am confident I will have the highest playing handicap of them all at 26!
“Norman steered the ship brilliantly during the last two years, having to deal with the uncertainty around. The last captain to have two years was during the Second World War.”
Seaton Carew now has a waiting list for membership and is looking forward to hosting the English Amateur Championship during its 150th birthday celebrations in 2024.
The AGM also saw Irene Allcroft named the new Lady Captain and Louis Westmoreland as the Junior Captain. Eddie I’Anson now becomes vice-captain of the club.
It was also confirmed that outgoing professional Clifford Jackson has been nominated for an honorary life membership following 14 years of service.
Dave said: “My chosen charity to help during my captaincy is the Macmillan Nurses. All monies raised will go directly to the Hartlepool section.
“Long-serving member and former captain Ian Philips has done some fantastic work with the charity over the last 30 years and it will be nice to help the continued efforts to support that charity.”
Dave, Arlene and Louis will all be on the first tee on New Year’s Day to officially mark the start of 2022 with the Captains Drive-in.

“At last – having been vice-captain for two years due to Covid it is a great honour to take over.”
