Thousands of visitors flocked to the historic Headland to watch the tall ships sail away and bring an end to an incredible four days in Hartlepool.

From Seaton Carew to Steetley Pier and Elephant Rock to the Town Moor, people jostled for position as the breathtaking sight of 34 beautiful vessels started the second leg of the Tall Ships Races.

Everyone wanted the best spot to watch the ships begin their journey to Fredrikstad, Norway, and fans could be seen looking through binoculars and telescopes trying to get a glimpse of those on board.

Leader of Hartlepool Borough Council Mike Young said: “What an incredible ending to a fantastic four days for Hartlepool and our local area.

“We have been proud to have welcomed thousands of visitors from around the world. We have heard we have had visitors from as far away as America and Australia. This incredible event has well and truly put Hartlepool on the map.

“It was fantastic to see the sunshine come out again on Sunday for the public to see the ships head off in the North Sea on the next leg of the Tall Ships Races to Norway.”

Following the ships’ arrival, highlights of the four-day event included Friday’s Crew Parade through the Headland and performances from Maximo Park and The Wailers, as well as the Tower of Light and fireworks displays.

There was also the surprise homecoming appearance of the town’s undisputed world boxing champion Savannah Marshall on Saturday night as thousands upon thousands visited Hartlepool Marina and Waterfront.

To cap it all off, Sunday’s Grand Departure and Parade of Sail off the coast of the town was bathed in sunshine as vessels left port at regular intervals after a 7am start.

Pauline Appleby, Sail Training International’s media manager, said: “It has been a long and incredible four days, with a perfect end to the most wonderful event here in Hartlepool.

“It was great to see the ships safely away on their way to Fredrikstad and we look forward to returning some day.”
