Alice House Hospice & X-energy Charity Golf Day

Organisers of the third annual Alice House Hospice & X-energy Charity Golf Day are already drawing up plans for next year’s event after a sell-out tournament raised thousands of pounds for vital local care.

A full line-up of 20 teams from across the local business community took to the fairways at Hartlepool Golf Club for the highly successful event, which was co-organised by Harrison Smith of Azalea Wealth Management and Paul Fraser of Rephrase.

Supported by headline sponsors X-energy, the day successfully raised more than £8,000 for local hospice care. This fantastic fundraising total is set to be boosted even further thanks to matched funding provided by Lloyds Bank.

The event was a community effort, with dedicated staff volunteering on the day from EDF Energy, Lloyds Bank, Geo Agriculture and Orangebox Training Solutions.

A Community Effort

Greg Hildreth, business and communications manager at Alice House, said: “Huge thanks to everyone who supported this event, with special thanks to sponsors X-energy, Harrison Smith of Azalea, Paul Fraser of Rephrase along with Mark Davies and everyone at Hartlepool Golf Club.

“The event was a great success and a really enjoyable day. All involved were incredibly generous, which led to a fantastic fundraising total that will help to sustain local Hospice services and make a real difference to local families.

“This kind of support is of massive importance to the Hospice – we are already starting to plan next year’s event and will be sharing details soon.”

The funds raised are crucial for Alice House Hospice, which provides specialist care and support to patients and families affected by life-limiting illnesses or the death of a loved one across Hartlepool, the Tees Valley and East Durham.

Why Fundraising Matters

It costs £3.7m to fund these essential services for just one year. With the Hospice receiving only 34 per cent of this in Government funding, there is a daunting shortfall of over £6,500 that must be raised every single day.

X-energy’s Commitment to the Community

X-energy is driving a project proposing the construction of up to 12 reactors next to the existing nuclear power station in Hartlepool.

Leon Flexman, corporate affairs director at X-energy, said: “It was an absolutely fantastic day and X-energy is incredibly proud to have played a part, alongside so many others, in making the event such a great success.

“Alongside our partner Centrica, X-energy is committed to supporting the local community in the years to come. Working with key charities and organisations like Alice House is a vital part of that journey.

“We hope everyone involved enjoyed the day and the rewarding feeling of making a real difference to patients and families from our community.”

The £10,000 Hole-in-One

The original idea to launch the charity golf day three years ago came from Harrison, managing director of Azalea.

Amongst the sponsors on the day, Azalea sponsored a hole-in-one competition on the 12th with a cash prize of £10,000. Unfortunately, this prize was unclaimed and will be up for grabs again next year.

Harrison said: “Seeing this event grow from a simple idea into a sell-out day that brings the whole business community together is incredibly rewarding.

“We were thrilled to sponsor the £10,000 hole-in-one prize this year, and my heart was definitely in my mouth when one golfer came agonisingly close, landing just 59 inches from the pin!

“We are so proud of what has been achieved and we are already looking forward to making next year even bigger and better.”

The organisers also extended their thanks to all prize donors and individual hole sponsors who contributed to the day, who were giving shout outs and logos present on the day.

The Winners

The overall team event was won by Wilton Engineering Team 1, with Hartlepool College of Further Education taking second place. Third place was claimed by X-energy Team 2, which featured the Hartlepool Golf Club captain Colin Jones and vice-captain Tommy Robson.

Individual honours went to John Cowley for nearest to the pin, Jack Stonehouse who claimed the longest drive and Greig Pinnell who triumphed in the putting competition.
